Advanced Chemical Containment Strategies for Industrial Infrastructure Protection
Sikagard®-170 CR, a 100 percent solids Novolac epoxy system, is designed to protect concrete in highly corrosive industrial environments and secondary containment areas. The coating is formulated for chemical resistance and is used in wastewater, pulp and paper, metal treatment, battery storage and food processing facilities. Its technical profile emphasizes low volatile organic compound content, rapid initial cure and long-term durability.
Core technical advantages and applications
The product is a solvent-free, nearly odorless liquid coating that forms a seamless physical barrier on concrete surfaces. Its principal advantage is high chemical resistance, particularly against sulfuric acid and a range of complex industrial chemicals. Because the system contains 100 percent solids, it emits minimal volatile organic compounds during application, improving the work environment and supporting a dense, durable cured film.
The coating is intended for horizontal floors, vertical walls, drainage trenches and inspection manholes. Industrial settings include wastewater treatment plants, pulp and paper mills, metal treatment shops, battery storage areas and food processing plants. In these environments, the system is positioned as a long-term protective layer intended to reduce floor maintenance costs.
Technical parameters
The following data are drawn from the product’s technical specifications.
| Technical indicator | Value or standard |
|---|---|
| Chemical base | 100% solids Novolac epoxy |
| Shore D hardness | 80–82 (ASTM D 2240) |
| Compressive strength | 14,300 psi (99 MPa) (ASTM D 695) |
| Tensile strength | 5,700 psi (39 MPa) (ASTM D 638) |
| Mixed viscosity | 4,000 cps (ASTM D 2393) |
Application and curing requirements
Application must follow specified environmental and handling conditions. Ambient temperature should remain between 50 and 120 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 49 degrees Celsius). The mixing ratio is 2:1 by volume, and the material has a pot life of 30 to 45 minutes. At 75 degrees Fahrenheit (24 degrees Celsius), the coating reaches an initial cure within 24 hours, while full chemical resistance requires a seven-day cure period.
For improved adhesion to the substrate, a primer such as SikaEmaco® P 130 is recommended. In areas requiring slip resistance, an aggregate broadcast can be applied to enhance floor safety while maintaining chemical protection.
Cured coating performance depends on proper surface preparation, strict adherence to mix ratios and full cure before chemical exposure. The seven-day cure schedule is necessary before the coating is placed into continuous chemical service.
